Ming in TV Shows and Comics
The Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s featured Ming, a character played by Charles B. Middleton. Ming was a ruthless warlord and brilliant scientist who used his Nitron Lamp to cause Earth disasters. In Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940), Ming is the ruler of Mongo and takes on a Hitler-like persona, complete with elaborate military uniforms and ridiculous plumed headwear.
Peston forgot the name Tyrone Mings while he was presenting the program. Peston apologized repeatedly on the show and said that he had made a mistake. He wanted Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka to focus on football, not politics. The result was that the press gave the men a harsh review and Robert Peston rebuked them.
The 1996 animated series portrays Ming as a green alien with sharp teeth and pointy ears. John Ralston plays Ming and Aura in the 1996 animated film. Ming’s appearance in the film is more melodramatic than the original comic strip. The character is still identifiable, despite being a reptilian. Flash and Aura are not the only characters that bear the Ming name.
