Andrea Lucas
Andrea Lucas – First Woman to Hold a Seat on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Andrea Lucas specializes in luxury properties in New York City and has sold numerous apartments at record prices per square foot.
She has extensive experience as a civil rights attorney. Her EEOC work primarily centers on religious discrimination cases – this included working on abortion travel benefits.
Early Life and Education
Andrea Lucas has been featured on HGTV’s Selling New York and FOX 5 TV, as well as being quoted in various publications such as Wall Street Journal, Forbes Magazine and New York magazine.
Her extensive background defending private corporations raises serious doubts over her capacity to further the EEOC’s critical work of protecting working people during this national crisis.
At present, there are 136 companies providing abortion travel benefits such as subsidies for travel and lodging to gain access to out-of-state abortion care. Lucas is currently investigating several of these employers by exercising her rarely utilized power as Commissioner to file charges without approval of other commissioners.
Professional Career
Andrea Lucas was confirmed by the Senate on September 22, 2020 to serve a five-year term as Commissioner on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, following President Trump’s nomination of her back in March of this year. Prior to being nominated she worked as senior associate at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP law firm.
Formerly, she was well known for defending private corporations against employees’ claims of workplace discrimination brought forward against them by employees. Furthermore, she faced criticism for prioritizing religious discrimination over other forms of harassment investigated by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
Entrepreneur, keynote speaker, author, feminist, life and business coach and passionate advocate for women owning their power, she is the founder of Barre & Soul studios with an instructor training program and chain of feminist-focused barre and yoga studios spanning across multiple cities in California and Arizona.
Achievement and Honors
Andrea Lucas made history when she became one of the first women ever appointed to serve on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, making her one of the first role models to do so at such an early age. Now a leader in her field and unafraid to address controversial issues head-on.
Lucas first gained recognition through her association with Charles Saatchi’s Freeze and YBA movement; however, her art goes well beyond this association with direct, provocative commentary on female objectification.
She works intermittently on her art in Suffolk without owning a studio and prefers working directly with her hands rather than intellectualizing the process. Together with Julien Simmons she lives in a converted cottage.
Personal Life
Lucas is married and the mother of two daughters. She works in the labor and employment law practice group at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP where she also sits on its Washington, DC Diversity Committee and Women’s Subcommittee.
Barre & Soul, founded by Kristine in Boston’s surrounding suburbs in 2007, operates five innovative yoga and barre studios as well as an athletic-wear clothing line. Kristine started this business out of a 700 square-foot space she couldn’t afford, which later evolved into what we know today as Barre & Soul.
She exudes badass spirit and cat eyeliner for days! She is a life and business coach, feminist, trauma survivor and an inspiration to women looking to own their power and live the lifestyle they want – using bodywork and psychotherapy techniques to heal others through touch.
