Waterbury, CT, Is a Safe, Family-Friendly City

Waterbury, a city of 120,000 located on the Naugatuck River in Connecticut’s northeastern corner, is a major transportation hub for commuters. The city is served by Metro-North Railroad, which operates commuter trains between Waterbury and Bridgeport.

The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (NYH&H) once ran a line through Waterbury that included the Union Station, which has been closed since 2009. Today, there are no ticket agents at Waterbury’s station.

Downtown, the city’s center is dominated by the 19-story City Hall. The building was constructed in 1896 by architect Cass Gilbert and opened to the public on April 30, 1900. The building is a National Historic Landmark.

A statue of Ben Franklin sits on the grounds of City Hall and was sculpted by Paul Wayland Bartlett, who is a Waterbury native. The building is also home to the Mattatuck Museum Arts and History Center, which features the works of several Connecticut artists.

DNA evidence confirmed that the body was Rachel Lerato Sebetlela, who disappeared in July after she stopped communicating with her boyfriend and roommates.

She was known to be a drug user, so police have no reason to suspect that her death wasn’t accidental. The investigation is ongoing.

The body is not the first to be found in the area where the remains of several other women have been discovered over the years. The body of a man was discovered in the same area in 1986. The body was found with the help of a hunter who happened to be in the area at the time.
