Dallas George, a Dallas Cowboys Owner, is a Lifelong Supporter of Black Dallas Remembered

Longtime member of Black Dallas Remembered, Dallas George dedicated much of his life to the preservation and recognition of the city’s history. He spearheaded efforts to bring a memorial for victims of racial violence in Dallas to Martyrs Park.

According to a recent report from the Office of Arts and Culture, construction on the memorial is underway. Entitled “Shadow Lines,” it pays homage to those affected by lynching and other forms of discrimination in Detroit.

Early Life and Education

George Aldredge, a Dallas native and the namesake of Southlake High School, is another prime example of how an interest in history can shape local life. He built a popular public bath and fountain using minerals found beneath Cobb Stadium to tap into local resources. The Aldredges — two old-money families from Dallas — had an immense impact on Dallas’ culture and heritage.

Dallas George, a Texas-born and raised entrepreneur, boasts an impressive resume in the real estate business. His expertise has allowed him to close over 1,350 deals worth $700 million worth of transactions within the Dallas Metroplex alone.

Achievements and Honors

Dallas George had a lifelong commitment to community service. In the 1960s, he was part of a group of Whites and African Americans that organized a committee that began desegregation efforts in public facilities, schools and employment in Dallas.

His efforts were recognized with numerous awards and honors, including an honorary degree from Bishop College and Texas Southern University. Furthermore, the South Dallas Business and Professional Woman’s Club, Dallas Negro Chamber of Commerce and YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas recognized his community service efforts.

He served as president of both the Dallas Builders Association in 2003 and Texas Association of Builders in 2006. Furthermore, he is a Life Director for both associations.

Personal Life

Dallas George was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) as an undergraduate. As a private secretary to Albert Gallatin, Minister to Russia (1813-1814), he then practiced law in New York.

Dallas was elected to the United States Senate in 1831. After declining his nomination for reelection, he resumed his private legal practice.

He was appointed Attorney General of Pennsylvania in 1833 and, two years later, President Martin Van Buren appointed him Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia.

He was the Democratic Party’s nominee for vice president in 1844 and worked to reduce tariffs and promote territorial expansion. Additionally, he supported Popular Sovereignty on slavery issues.
