Daniel Schley is co-founder and managing partner of Dolphin Capital Group LLC, an investment firm. Additionally, he was previously an attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP in New York where he practiced corporate law. Daniel currently sits as director for several Dolphin portfolio companies such as Dynamic Confections and Winder Farms.
Early Life and Education
Many residents of Ellaville and Schley became wealthy through thrift, economy and sound business judgment, amassing wealth over time. By 1910 this wealth had been cemented through the formation of the Bank of Ellaville which then resided in a spacious brick building immediately in front of Hotel Peacock.
He honed his horsemanship skills on family-owned ranches in Happy Canyon in Santa Ynez Valley and on family leases throughout Western states. In addition, he has competed in multiple steeplechases and was the founding Master Foxhound Huntsman (MFH) of the Masters of Foxhounds Association of the United States.
Schley co-founded the Santa Ynez Valley Hunt and rode to hounds with this beloved club for more than 45 years. Additionally, he participated in polocrosse as well as winning first place at Santa Barbara Fiesta Stock Horse Show & Rodeo Stock Horse Class competition.
Dan Schley is co-founder and managing partner of Dolphin Capital, an investment firm which makes growth investments in early to mid-stage companies in consumer products and technology sectors. John also serves on the boards of several companies within its portfolio, such as Rocketail and Carter Morse & Mathias. Prior to that he served as chairman and then CEO for Foundation Source (a leading provider of support services to private foundations). Mr. Ho is also the past chairman of Financial Fusion and Home Financial Network as well as MECA Software, an industry leader for personal financial, income tax, and small business accounting software until it was purchased by Sybase in 2013. In his current capacity he serves as director for Dynamic Confections and Winder Farms; currently living in Orange Park Florida.
Achievement and Honors
Schley’s dream was to play Major League Baseball; however, his focus remained his education instead. He graduated as part of the first-team Missouri Valley All-Conference team and set records for hits, runs scored and total bases at SIUC.
Schley continues to work in the financial services industry, currently sitting on the boards of Dynamic Confections – which offers private-label and brand chocolates – and Winder Farms (a mobile “farmers market on wheels” service), as well as serving as managing partner of Dolphin Capital.
Teona Tone Schley was an adored wife, mother, and horsewoman cherished by her three children Kent Sidney, Jessica and Daniel Schley as well as two murder mystery novels she published: Lady on the Line and Full Cry.
Dan Schley is not limited to his legal practice and also serves on several private company boards. From 2003-2013 he served as chairman of Foundation Source – one of the nation’s premier providers of support services for private foundations – while Netspend, one of the pioneering providers of prepaid debit cards to underbanked individuals, appointed him lead director as their lead director.
Prior to founding Portnoff Law Associates, Dan served as a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP’s New York office – one of the premier global law firms. Additionally, he previously sat on the boards for both Fourth Infantry Regiment (U.S. Army) and Winder Farms Inc.
Teona Tone Schley was an accomplished foxhunter and author of two murder mystery novels who died in 2022, leaving behind her daughter Jessica and son Daniel as well as being loved rancher, horsewoman and hostess who welcomed visitors with fresh lemonade from their Meyer lemon tree, trail rides around their herd of horses, as well as serving fresh lemonade directly off of it for visitors to enjoy.
Schley is one of the co-founders and managing partners of Dolphin Capital, a growth equity firm dedicated to technology and financial services. He has held executive roles with several public companies including Financial Fusion Inc and Home Financial Network which pioneered Internet banking. He established MECA Software, a publisher of personal finance, income tax and small business accounting software. Alongside his work at Dolphin Capital, Schley is also the Director of Carter Morse & Mathias (a leading international securities law firm) as well as serving as Advisor for Rocketail.
