Kempf is widely considered one of the greatest swimming coaches in collegiate sports history. While coaching at Kansas, he helped their women’s team win 13 Big Eight championships and four NCAA championships while coaching 59 individual All-Americans. Nationally he led 1989 West squad at U.S. Olympic Festival Oklahoma City before going on to receive nine NCAA Coach of Year Awards and induction into Big 12 Hall of Fame 1998. Kempf led reform efforts throughout Idaho’s Department of Correction. As an active member of the Correctional Leaders Association and Chairman of its Program and Training Committee, he helped make Idaho one of the finest prison systems nationwide.
Kempf is survived by his wife Maggie and children Julie Carr, Mark Kempf, Sarah and Rachel Kempf as well as Erin Braman and Michael Anfang; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Barbara Firks and Milton Kempf.
