Daniel Woodard – A Loving Father, Son, and Grandfather
Daniel Woodard was an extraordinary individual, serving both in the Air Force and Army as an educator and administrator. He leaves behind his loving wife Elaine, daughter Nicole Brown Brown-Tullmann (Dwayne Brown’s son-in-law), their grandchildren Zoe and Joshua; as well as numerous close family and friends.
Dan has extensive experience litigating cases involving asbestos, mesothelioma, lung cancer, medical malpractice, wrongful death and infant lead paint poisoning across the United States. He was chosen as a Super Lawyers from 2011-2022.
Early Life and Education
Daniel Woodard hails from Middle Tennessee and graduated high school before enlisting with the U.S. Air Force to become a helicopter pilot, earning several accolades such as Air Force Commendation Medals.
After returning from military service, he pursued a career as an educator. First teaching elementary school while coaching football and basketball; later transitioning to White Plains Central School District as its first African American administrator.
Subsequently, he attended law school and passed the bar exam, eventually practicing law in both New York and New Jersey with an emphasis on personal injury and product liability cases. Additionally, he is a member of the New York City Bar Association.
Professional Career
After his service in the military, Dan decided to embark on a career in education. He began by teaching elementary school and coaching football and basketball before moving on to work at White Plains Central School District (WPCSD), eventually becoming an integral member of their community and becoming their first African American administrator.
Woodard guided Charlotte Niners baseball club through one of the best seasons ever in program history during his fourth year as manager, scoring 36 wins and reaching the Regional tournament twice during that time. Additionally, during Woodard’s time on board they became the inaugural partner to P3 Baseball Training of St Louis for customized baseball training tailored specifically towards individual player needs.
He led his team to set a conference record with 23 regular-season victories in conference play.
Achievement and Honors
Of his many accomplishments, one standout honor was receiving the President’s Service Excellence Award, presented to staff who have gone the extra mile in supporting VCU and its people. His commitment to building strong relationships and resolving concerns quickly and sensitively made an imprintful mark on campus life.
Woodard also appeared in Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law on television, earning numerous accolades such as an Emmy award for her portrayal of Dr. Roxanne Turner on St Elsewhere as well as a CableACE Award for portraying South African activist Winnie Mandela in Mandela in 1987 film.
He leaves behind his sister Ruth Cason; niece Louise Edney; grandniece Todd Edney; grandson Donovan Woodard Brown; cousin Ceil Carey; as well as an entire host of family and friends who will always remember and miss him dearly.
Personal Life
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Elaine; daughters Nicole and Alicia Woodard; son-in-law Dwayne Brown and grandchildren Zoe and Joshua who he cherished greatly. Additionally he leaves behind his sister Ruth Cason; niece Louise Edney (grand-niece of Todd Edney); as well as numerous friends and family who will forever treasure his memory.
Dan enjoyed spending his free time with his family and following sports – be it high school, college, or professional levels – of all sorts. Additionally, he was actively involved with his church where he helped serve the local community.
Dan was an extraordinary example of integrity, intelligence and genuine kindness. His indefatigable spirit and profound impactful on his community will long be remembered and deeply missed by us all. Rest in Peace Dan! The world needs more like you.
