Early Life and Education

Baker was born in Indianapolis and began his musical journey as a trombonist. Throughout high school and college, he honed his craft performing jazz clubs along Indiana Avenue with Jimmy Coe, Slide Hampton, J. J. Johnson, and Wes Montgomery.

He went on to become a teacher, founding the first jazz studies program at an American university. Additionally, he penned hundreds of scholarly articles and compositions about music.
