Early Life and Education
David Dowrich was born and raised in Barbados. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science and Applied Statistics from the University of Toronto as well as an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.
He began his career as an employee benefits consultant in Toronto. Subsequently, he relocated to Barbados and worked for a Canadian insurance company’s reinsurance operations division.
Dave has been a Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder since 2002 and an active participant in the Association of Financial Professionals.

Over his nearly 30-year career, Dave Dowrich held several senior executive roles at American International Group, including interim CEO of international life and retirement; CFO of AIG Japan and Asia Pacific; and chief financial actuary for institutional markets. Additionally, he served as senior investment banker at Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse where he advised life, non-life and financial guaranty insurance clients on policies. Furthermore, Dave also has reinsurance and structuring experience from Swiss Re and Canada Life Reinsurance companies.
He recently joined Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA) as their senior executive vice president and chief financial officer, responsible for all financial management, planning, actuarial, tax, and accounting operations and strategies. Based in New York, his role will report directly to TIAA President and CEO Thasunda Brown Duckett.
Achievements and Honors
Dave Dowrich is a first-generation college-educated Barbadian who earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. Additionally, he holds an honors bachelor’s degree in actuarial science and applied statistics from the University of Toronto.
He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an associate member of the American Academy of Actuaries and an active participant in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. With extensive experience in insurance and investment management, he has held senior-level posts at American International Group Inc. and Prudential Financial, where he served as CFO for its international businesses.
He has been appointed Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America – College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA), New York’s largest retirement services firm with $1.3 trillion in assets under management. Effective November 1st, he will join TIAA’s executive committee as a member.
