Early Life and Education

David Blalock was raised in Oxford, Mississippi and graduated from University High School with a degree in history from Vanderbilt University.

Blalock then attended medical school at Johns Hopkins and, upon graduating, began practicing surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The surgeon performed over 1,000 surgeries to correct congenital heart defects. Furthermore, he conducted extensive research and taught at the hospital.

He made numerous breakthroughs in the understanding of traumatic shock and promoted plasma transfusions – saving many lives during World War II.

David Blalock has earned praise for his “fine tenor voice” (Winston-Salem Journal). He has performed in a wide variety of repertoire, such as Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Pong in Turandot, Gastone in La traviata and Tamino in Die Zauberflote with Bar Harbor Music Festival and Pensacola Opera.

He sang Alfredo in La traviata with Arizona Opera, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Piedmont Opera and Madison Opera’s summer Opera in the Park celebration. Additionally, he performed a recital with Duluth Symphony Orchestra.
