David Bonness began his professional hockey career in 1973 with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He spent the entire season with the club, appearing in 71 games and scoring 24 goals and 95 points.
Following the 1973-74 season, he was selected by the Atlanta Flames in the second round of the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft and appeared in 28 games with them during 1976-77.
