David Bowlin – Violinist and Oberlin Conservatory Professor

David Bowlin, violinist and Oberlin Conservatory professor, is an acclaimed interpreter of both solo and chamber music. He has performed in recitals and concertos across America with critical acclaim from numerous sources.

He received his training at the Oberlin Conservatory, Juilliard School and Stony Brook University from principal teachers Roland and Almita Vamos, Ronald Copes, Pamela Frank, Philip Setzer and Ani Kavafian. At these institutions he won both the Washington International Competition and Samuel Baron Prize from Stony Brook University.

Early Life and Education

Bowlin is an accomplished violinist who has had a prestigious career as both a soloist and chamber musician, earning critical acclaim for performances across a wide repertoire. As first prize winner of the 2003 Washington International Competition, he has given recitals and concertos across America and Europe, many with world premieres.

His performance credits range from the Toronto Symphony, Chicago Lyric Opera and Komishe Oper Berlin to Musicians from Marlboro. Furthermore, he has been a guest artist at numerous organizations such as Boston Chamber Music Society, ChamberFest Cleveland, Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, Ojai SongFest and Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival.

Since 2007, he has been a faculty artist at Oberlin Conservatory, teaching both in the summer and on their string studies faculty. Additionally, he was one of the founding members of International Contemporary Ensemble which earned them recognition as Musical America’s 2014 Ensemble of the Year.

Professional Career

David Bowlin has earned critical acclaim for his performances of a wide range of repertoire, featuring many premieres. As founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), he has performed as both a recitalist and chamber musician throughout America.

He is a native of the Quad-Cities and artistic director of Chamber Music Quad-Cities, which brings chamber music performances to communities throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Additionally, he holds faculty appointments at Oberlin Conservatory as well as Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival and Bowdoin International Music Festival among others.

He has performed as a soloist and with the Oberlin Trio, Emerson, and Brentano quartets, Naumburg Award-winning Da Capo Chamber Players, Mitsuko Uchida Richard Goode Jonathan Biss and Jeremy Denk. His solo and chamber music recordings can be found on Bridge New Focus Nonesuch Arsis Mode Tundra Austrian National Radio Oberlin Music labels.
