David Cappuzzello has served as Superintendent of Austintown Local Schools since 2019.
Cappuzzello is a 1984 Chaney High School graduate and holds both Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education. With 11 years of experience as both a teacher and administrator, he holds memberships in both the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Early Life and Education
David Cappuzzello is a 1984 graduate of Chaney High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in education from The University of Akron. With 31 years of experience working with public schools, he has served as high school principal of Columbiana Exempted Village School District and middle school principal of Ravenna Southeast Local School District; additionally, he has 11 years as an educator. Married to Susan with three children, David resides with his family in Columbiana with his wife Susan and children.
He was appointed superintendent of Austintown Local Schools in 2019 and plans to retire on July 1 after fulfilling his 4-year contract with the district.
David Cappuzzello has served as Superintendent of Austintown Local Schools since 2019, following his tenure as Superintendent of Girard City Schools. Selected by the Austintown Board of Education to fill this position, he was granted a five-year contract at $135,000 per year with 31 years’ experience working within the public school system; teaching, coaching and serving as principal.
In addition to his superintendent role, he serves as assistant principal at Chaney High School and a special education teacher. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, he has been married to Mary Cappuzzello for 32 years.
Achievement and Honors
David Cappuzzello has earned recognition for his work as an actor, director and playwright throughout his career. He directed and produced several plays such as The Iceman Cometh at Brooklyn Academy of Music; Rebecca Gilman’s Luna Gale; and a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni for Lyric Opera of Chicago.
He has also been honored for his teaching abilities, receiving both the Paul Robeson Award and National Association of Black Theatres’ Merit Award. His classes have taken him to Fisk University, Roosevelt University and Eclipse Theatre; furthermore his works can be seen at ETA, Black Ensemble Theater and Northlight Theatre. Furthermore he served on the board of directors of Chicago Theatre Company for four seasons.
David Cappuzzello is not only an excellent teacher and administrator, but a devoted family man with four children. Married to his high school sweetheart Susan, they reside in Columbiana, OH. Both are known for being kindhearted individuals who generously give of their time, money and resources without hesitation. Plus they have an incredibly close-knit family dynamic too! Most importantly though: both are healthy and contented. Despite their hectic schedules they still manage time for each other – one favorite pastime being jogging on the beach when free from work!
