Early Life and Education
Roger Daniels was born in Keene, New Hampshire and attended Virginia Military Institute where he graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1961. While in seminary he responded to Martin Luther King’s call for clergy marchers from Selma to Montgomery by participating in Martin Luther King Jr.’s Selma to Montgomery March and joined Episcopal Society for Cultural and Racial Unity to advocate nonviolence on religious grounds.
After earning his PhD at UCLA, Dr. Kawamura focused his dissertation research on California’s anti-Japanese movement and published Japanese Americans, from Relocation to Redress (University of Utah Press 1986).
Daniels has led Duke’s Teacher Education Program with great success since becoming director, working to diversify cohorts by inviting working teachers as guest lecturers and recruiting prospective students from diverse backgrounds into her program. Her efforts have proved fruitful – this year’s group of new incoming students represents its highest diversity ever.
Professional Career
At UB, Daniels was an ardent champion of diversity. He established relationships with scholars from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds and helped establish the Jacobs School’s Early Opportunity Program in Medicine to provide pre-admission to medical school for students at UB, D’Youville College, Canisius College and Tougaloo College – each a historically Black college located in Mississippi.
Daniels also served as chair of Quarles & Brady and advocated for racial equity and inclusion both within the legal profession as well as Milwaukee community. Daniels was an active volunteer within Milwaukee community and served on various boards; dedicating much of his life to serving those in need, particularly children with disabilities. Daniels leaves behind his wife Janessa E. Givens Daniels and 2022 graduate daughter Jillian (UB College of Arts & Sciences graduate).
Achievement and Honors
Daniel earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors during 2022 season after completing 152 of 230 passes for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns, while also amassing 425 rushing yards with one score.
Erwin also earned All-Big 12 Academic honors. As an integral member of Regis Rangers men’s basketball, Erwin has been an integral contributor, starting every game and recording his best single game performance on January 29 against Adams State by scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds despite their narrow loss.
Latanya Daniels is an Assistant Superintendent in Richfield Public Schools and an AP US History and European History teacher. She has been instrumental in providing resources for students through essay contests and scholarships, enhancing writing achievement across the district, as well as winning Milken Educator Awards which recognize educators who demonstrate outstanding leadership while impacting student achievement.
Personal Life
An avid reader and movie watcher, he also is a talented singer with his band at various shows he performs at. Working in the entertainment industry for over two decades.
He has appeared in various films such as Twelfth Night or What Will, Hollywood Homicide and The Woodsman. Additionally, he has made several TV series appearances such as Law & Order: Frasier; House and Modern Family and Sirens as Hank St Clare from Chicago EMT service.
Daniels returned to directing and producing with Precious in 2009, an emotionally poignant yet gripping tale of Harlem teenager suffering parental abuse. It earned multiple awards at Stockholm, Sundance and Toronto International Film Festivals.
