Fort Leavenworth is the second oldest active military post west of the nation’s capital

Founded by Colonel Henry Leavenworth in 1827, Fort Leavenworth has been a military post in Kansas since its founding. It is the second oldest active Army post west of the Mississippi River. The United States Army’s Command and General Staff College is also located at Fort Leavenworth.

During the Mexican-American War, Fort Leavenworth was the outfitting post for the Army of the West. During World War II, a total of 26 infantry divisions trained at Fort Leavenworth. The post also hosted the schools that trained thousands of recruits during the war.

The Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery is the burial site for more than 170 military personnel. This cemetery is one of the oldest national cemeteries in the United States. During the Civil War, thousands of Union soldiers were buried here. The cemetery also served as the burial site for frontier soldiers in New Mexico.
