New Melones Reservoir, located in central California, is the ideal choice for those who enjoy a good kokanee fishing expedition. This reservoir is home of some of the largest kokanees in California, including fish as large as 18 inches. The fish grow in size throughout the season, and the biggest fish are often caught in the late summer.

The water temperature in New Melones Reservoir is currently in the low to mid 60s, with visibility in the range of 4 to 6 feet. Clear water is great for casting, but make sure to be aware of mudlines. The marina anticipates opening in mid May, but be aware that water levels are low.

Despite the drought, New Melones Lake is a great place to catch largemouth bass. The average size of these fish is around two pounds, but there are a few 10 pounders on the lake. If the stars align, it is possible to have 50-fish days. This lake is more a numbers-based than a trophy bass lake.

New Melones Lake is home to a number of game fish, including rainbow trout, brown trout, bass, and crappie. You might also be able to catch kokanee (the landlocked version) of sockeye salmon. They can be difficult to catch and are very elusive.

New Melones Lake is stocked with fingerling trout during the winter and early spring. The lake is a Y-shaped one, so there are many spots for trout. During spring and summer, anglers should focus on creek mouths and coves. Anglers should also be aware of the main lake islands. If you are looking for bass, the Glory Hole area and the Carson’s Creek are excellent locations.

If you are looking for a relaxing day trip, New Melones Lake is an excellent choice. The lake is located just north of Sonora, California and is accessible from most parts of the state. The water temperature is perfect for trout fishing.

Many recreational areas offer excellent bank fishing. The Tuttletown Recreation Area and Glory Hole Recreation Area offer plenty of open shoreline and excellent bank fishing opportunities. Both areas offer a boat ramp, restrooms, as well as bait shops. You can also find campsites right on the water.
