Hoagland was the son of a family that owned and operated Nebraska’s first lumber company. Additionally, he served as state senator and referee in bankruptcy proceedings.

George Hoagland was born in New Jersey to Aaron Carman Hoagland and Susan R. On September 10th 1938, he passed away at his death place of Nebraska.

Early Life and Education

George Hoagland was born in Bullitt County, Kentucky and became a successful Black entrepreneur who worked on steamboats and railroads throughout the Ohio River Valley.

He relocated to Normal, Minnesota in 1888 and quickly became active within the Black community there.

His life reflects the Black experience in America during the latter half of the 19th century.

He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Industrial Research. Additionally, he authored numerous articles related to science and technology. On October 2, 1984, at 84 years old, he passed away.

He holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Minnesota. His research interests encompass queer, trans and intersex people of color (QTIPOC) studies; critical theories of race, class, gender and sexuality; critical race and ethnic studies pedagogy; as well as critical race/science technology and society (STS) studies.

He has served as a university professor and received the Presidential Research Scholar award from Ohio University. Additionally, he was part of the university’s Faculty Senate and acting associate provost for graduate and research programs.

Hoagland’s grandfather was Steven Coerte Van Voorhis, who immigrated from Holland in April 1660 and settled in Flatlands, Kings County on the Island of Nassau. He married three times.
