George Phinney

George Phinney, a former professional cyclist, will be remembered for his strength and perseverance. He also had many friends, and had an enduring connection to Boston Children’s Hospital.

Surprisingly, music specialist Mark Eden Horowitz recently discovered an original cast recording of Sondheim’s 1948 musical Phinney’s Rainbow.

George Phinney made a lasting impact in many fields of study, displaying exceptional leadership in his work and life. Additionally, he gave back to the community while leaving an indelible mark on those close to him–family members and friends included.

He served as president of his church and was a popular lay speaker, Sunday school teacher and leader for many years. Additionally, he was an accomplished pilot and builder of experimental aircrafts.

He received numerous honors for his work, including the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American Water Works Association in 1990. Additionally, he served on the board of directors of the National Council for Water Supply Research.

George Phinney was an accomplished entrepreneur with a deep-seated passion for his profession. He founded several companies that manufactured and distributed agricultural and industrial equipment.

He was an enthusiastic pilot, flying many types of airplanes. A member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), he had been flying for many years.

He had such a passion for flying that he even built a model airplane in his garage!

In his later years, he dedicated himself to learning as much about aviation as possible. He had a vast amount of expertise and loved sharing it with others.

He is a member of nine Tour de France winning teams and has achieved success in numerous one-day classics, time trials and individual pursuits.

In 2014, Phinney won a stage of the Dubai Tour by breaking away from the peloton with 23 kilometers remaining. Additionally, he earned victory in a time-trial at the United States National Time Trial Championships.

He is the son of former professional road cyclist Davis Phinney and Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist and speed skater Connie Carpenter-Phinney, both former professional road cyclists. His specialty lies in time trials on the road as well as individual pursuit on track.
