Early Life and Education

Koehler had an expansive painting studio at his Southampton Village residence, which he filled with the works spanning a lifetime of accomplishment. Ralph Lauren, Evelyn de Rothschild and Sir William Russell Flint were among his collectors of his paintings.

He was also a founding member of the American Academy of Equine Art. His works showcased hunting, polo, steeplechasing and other field sport subjects.

He was honored with both silver and bronze medals from the Munich Academy as well as Bavaria’s Cross of Saint Michael award in 1888. Additionally, he was appointed to Minnesota State Art Commission and lectured on art history at University of Minnesota.

Professional Career

Henry Koehler was an intuitive and sophisticated artist whose paintings reflected the style and glamour of New York and Long Island society in the 1950s and 60s. His art could often be found in publications like Town & Country, Vogue and Sports Illustrated; Elizabeth Arden even called upon him for commission work.

He is widely considered one of America’s premier equine artists and his works can be found in collections belonging to Ralph Lauren, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild and Queen Elizabeth II.

Koehler’s home in Southampton Village is an example of understated elegance. An architecturally classic center hallway leads to the 25-foot living room and library, both featuring wood burning fireplaces; western exposures flood each room with natural light; while an eat-in kitchen features large bistro tile flooring for ample natural lighting.

Henry Koehler was an internationally acclaimed American painter and an enthusiastic sportsman. His works can be found in the collections of Ralph Lauren, John F Kennedy, Nina Campbell and Lord Hampton among many others; plus he exhibited more than 70 solo shows.

He was a member of the Society of Western Artists, Minnesota State Art Commission and an honorary member of Minneapolis School of Art Alumni Association – garnering numerous awards and medals in recognition of his works.

He gained notoriety as an illustrator whose works appeared in Town & Country and Vogue magazines. Later in life he resided in Southampton, New York before passing away on December 24th 2018 at age 96.

Henry Koehler was an internationally acclaimed sports artist. For three decades he lived in an exquisite Southampton Village home constructed in the 1880s from cedar shingles with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and an enclosed screened-in porch that he later sold in 2018.

Koehler’s sale included many of his paintings as well as furnishings, silver, porcelain and Asian/Egyptian objects he collected – in particular an easel/travelling art kit/fox hunting gear kit/and personal belongings that belonged to him.

Henry Koehler’s estate recently sold their Southampton Village residence for a price of $2.295 million. This home features an architecturally classic center hallway, 25-foot living room, wood burning fireplace and western exposures in its eat-in kitchen – in addition to multiple rooms on the first floor as well as offices and libraries.
