Early Life and Education

Baird was known for being generous and thoughtful leader throughout his professional life. He served on several industry advisory panels, including one that involved working closely with the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Baird also worked on other projects, such as Phonovision – an early video recording system developed using a Nipkow disk that had been invented in 1884 – which allowed him to test various television systems.

He came from humble roots, growing up in a small rural town and developing pragmatic approaches to problem-solving. An avid reader, his focus became scaling pain and other medical conditions. Furthermore, he was an attentive partner to Clare and loving father to his two sons.

Professional Career

Jack Baird’s journey with the Philadelphia police was an epic rogue cop tale that culminated in 1991, when he and a partner kidnapped Arthur Colbert off West Ontario Street and brutally beat him. Baird’s story ignited Philadelphia’s biggest-ever police corruption scandal and required them to pay out $5 million in settlements for false arrest suits and overturn hundreds of convictions against Arthur Colbert.

He specialized in psychophysics of visual space, publishing over 150 papers and 8 books covering subjects like the moon illusion, pattern recognition and communication with beings from outer space. His unassuming manner and egalitarian attitude won the admiration of students – especially undergraduates.

He was also an exemplary family man, creating an extravagant Christmas display in his Annadale home that brought great delight to many residents each year. Additionally, both he and his wife played pivotal roles in creating Blue Heron Park.

Achievement and Honors

Baird is well known in broadcast history as an innovator of television. Additionally, his invention of radio technology helped contribute to modern data networks.

In 1925, Paul Gottlieb Nipkow sent the first television images over short distances using a system developed by Paul Gottlieb Nipkow. These small pictures measured only 3.5″ x 2″, using his scanning system devised.

Bell Laboratories offered him supervisory work in military systems development utilizing transistors and other solid-state devices, when he returned.

Project UNICOM was an important initiative of the United States Army Signal Corps which featured a major circuit and message switching network with real-time computer systems for strategic communications; additionally it introduced stored program computers as tools in telecommunics networks.

Personal Life

Miki Baird is an artist from Kansas specializing in sculpture and painting. Her pieces combine heavy metals, silicone rubbers, broken objects and paper. Her artistic process involves looking, collecting, archiving, printing, deconstructing and reconstructing.

Through his long career, Baird was both a committed family man and active community member. He participated in various civic and charitable organizations while offering generous mentoring advice to many of his subordinates.

As one of his many achievements, he helped establish Blue Heron Park on Staten Island – a 250-acre nature preserve and educational resource – alongside his wife, two children, and three grandchildren. Additionally, he was an ardent supporter of music and the arts throughout his life.
