John Carman is a renowned whistleblower who has filed suit against the U.S. Customs Service since 1995 for corruption and management violations.
He is an internationally-renowned martial arts expert in Judo, Karate and Aikido. Additionally, he works as a consultant to law enforcement officers and prosecutors around the world.
Early Life and Education
John Carmen was born on July 14, 1938 in Waterbury, Connecticut to Mary (Massimo) Lombardi and John Lombardi.
John began playing piano and singing in rock ‘n’ roll bands when he was young. Ultimately, he chose to attend college and pursue a career in music education.
He taught for many years in Niles, Illinois and also coached basketball, baseball and soccer to children.
He had an ambition for success and loved what he did. As an expert in his field and leader within the community, he remained close to family and friends. Additionally, he served as a great father and role model for his kids.
Professional Career
John Carmen is a professional singer-dancer-actress who has performed in numerous plays across America. On Broadway he appeared in Equus, The Merchant and The Miser; regionally at Schoolhouse Theatre, Cape May Stage, Cleveland Playhouse, South Jersey Regional Theatre and Shakespeare on the Sound.
He has collaborated as a guest artist with American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Philadanco and the Metropolitan Opera. Additionally, he has taught at Juilliard, Mannes School of Music, New York Conservatory of Dramatic Art, Cornell University, Lafayette College and Martina Arroyo Foundation institutions.
Carmen founded The Workers Lab, an innovation hub that invests in entrepreneurs, community organizers and government leaders to develop replicable solutions that improve conditions for low-wage workers. Prior to founding The Workers Lab, Carmen served as Acting Director of Collective Impact at Living Cities where she supported 22 of the largest foundations and financial institutions to invest in increasing economic opportunity for those on low incomes.
Achievements and Honors
He was an outstanding all-around performer at Hampton High School in Pennsylvania and continued on to Allegheny College where he earned co-captain status by head coach Red Moore. Additionally, Associated Press Little All-America honorees were bestowed upon him at two different positions.
He helped pave the way for fellow All-American Jim Villa, who went on to be a star player at Allegheny and later in the NFL. Additionally, he served as Allegheny’s athletic director for seven years and its president for two terms.
Early in his career, Carmen played guitar for several bands such as Fandangos in Space and Dancing on a Cold Wind before forming Carmen with bassist John Glascock, guitarist David Bowie (who featured them on the 1980 Floor Show), and guitarist Paul Fenton. They then recorded their final album The Gypsies with producer Tony Visconti.
