John Caroff is an acclaimed American artist whose work can be seen at Tom Sergott’s studio gallery in Newport. His artwork draws from cubism to Leger’s mechanical renditions and beyond into abstraction.
All Caroff wanted was to show his 13-year-old daughter, a budding football strategist, the video of Rutgers-Penn State’s game on Dec. 5, 2020.
Early Life and Education
John Caroff was born in Windber, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering science from Swarthmore College in 1962 and went on to receive his PhD in applied physics from Cornell University the following year. Additionally, John was an active member of the American Astronomical Society.
Caroff achieved great academic success, but he also made a name for himself as a graphic designer. His artwork graced some of the most enduring movie posters and logos ever created.
This exhibition showcases over 100 of his works, beautifully displayed for everyone to appreciate. Tom Sergott, the show curator, has done an outstanding job showcasing this artist’s works. The result is an eye-catching display that should not be missed! The Sergott Contemporary Art Alliance gallery in Rancho Santa Fe, New Mexico runs until August 17th and offers free admission.
Professional Career
He was an American graphic designer renowned for his film posters and corporate logos. His impressive portfolio included over 300 film campaigns, such as Cabaret (directed by Bob Fosse), Last Tango in Paris (directed by Bernardo Bertolucci) and Zelig (directed by Woody Allen).
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science from Swarthmore College (1962-1963). Later, he graduated with a Doctorate of Applied Physics from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Once back in the United States, Caroff joined the technical staff of Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles as a research scientist until 1967. Additionally, he was an active participant in both American Astronomical Society and International Astronomical Union committees, served on the Board of Directors for NASA/NASA Aeronautics & Space Administration, and served on other advisory bodies as well.

Over his long and illustrious career, he has earned the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Additionally, he boasts an impressive list of awards and accolades to his name; among these include Omicron Delta Kappa’s President’s Award – an official university recognition for outstanding academic performance in a given semester; commendation as a top student in the College of Information and Communications; as well as several honorary degrees from universities in his home state of Texas.
He has earned widespread praise during his time as an officer in the Bureau of Prisons for his contributions to its success. As one of only four men to hold this distinction, he is proud of being recognized by those within and outside of prison circles alike for his leadership within one of America’s premier correctional agencies.

John Caroff had a distinguished career in the commercial art world for decades, but his greatest triumph was designing film posters. His designs can be found on more than 300 film campaigns worldwide, such as West Side Story, Barbarella and The Greatest Story Ever Told.
He designed many logos for corporate clients such as Fox trademark, Decca Records, 20/20 and ABC News, in addition to designing numerous NY Racing Association emblems.
He is a member of both the American Astronomical Society and International Astronomical Union, having held positions at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California and NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C. Additionally, he served on technical staff at Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles as well as being awarded a Howard Hughes doctoral fellowship by NASA.
