The first Governor of South Carolina, John Calhoun was a statesman and legal expert. He fought for the rights of South Carolina citizens, and was one of the architects of the state’s emancipation from property qualifications.
He also founded the United States Catholic Miscellany, a newspaper that was the first distinctively Catholic publication in the country. His indefatigable zeal and energy made him an important figure in the agitation for Catholic emancipation in the United States.
Early Life and Education
During his childhood, John grew up in the company of a wealthy planter. His father made his fortune in the slave trade and, like other members of his class, he was active in politics.
He received his early classical education and studied law at London’s Middle Temple. He was admitted to the English bar in 1760 and returned to Charleston, where he established himself as a reputable attorney.
Typical of his class, Rutledge gravitated toward politics and became a member of the provincial assembly in 1761. He was also the colony’s attorney general in 1764. He advocated legislative reapportionment and white manhood suffrage. During the American Revolution, he was a prominent leader of the Constitutional Convention.

The Krause Center for Leadership & Ethics awarded John Palms the Krause Award for Distinguished Service, Leadership and Ethics during the South Carolina Corps of Cadets dress parade on March 4, 2022. He brings extensive experience in military officership, nuclear science and academia to The Citadel.
The Commodores’ Award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in a particular field. It is a cash prize of $1,000 and an award trophy. The citation for this award is the highest honor an honoree can receive. The winning entry is selected from a pool of finalists, who are evaluated on their merits and ability to demonstrate the most impact.
Personal Life
Originally from Charleston, John moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. After a brief stint with a singer-songwriter, he returned home to start the family business.
When he’s not working in the family business, John loves spending time with his wife, two sons, and an English cream retriever named Emmie. He also enjoys surfing the swells as often as possible.
While he’s not quite familiar with Southern Charm, John seems to be ready to dive in and make a mark on the show. That might involve creating drama between Madison and Austen, which he clearly isn’t afraid to do.
