Epperly has served in the Army National Guard for more than 30 years and served as commander of the 29th Infantry Division. Throughout that time, he has completed various military training courses such as Airborne School, Air Assault School, Armor Officers Basic Course, Scout Platoon Leader’s Course, Infantry Mortar Leader’s Course and U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

In 2003 he assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 116th Infantry Brigade which was deployed as part of Operation Vigilant Relief to assist civil authorities following Hurricane Katrina.

Throughout his career, Epperly earned a number of awards and decorations. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
