John Fallin

John Fallin is a business analyst for Interval Partners, LP. He is a former Civil War veteran who served with the 23rd Virginia Infantry.

He was a soldier at the Battle of Gettysburg. His rifle-musket is now on display at the U.S. National Park Service’s new Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center.

Early Life and Education

Inglis believed that education was an important if underappreciated aspect of human development, and that it could be done in ways that were both practical and ethical. He recognized that habits and prejudices formed in youth would be hard to break later on, and he wanted to develop the best possible methods for inculcating virtue and industry.

He was a bit of a proponent of the concept, as he authored a book called Some Thoughts Concerning Education that was a must-read for those who were interested in improving the quality of schooling. He also was a keen advocate of the use of technology to improve learning, as he argued that computers were the modern world’s best hope for making education more efficient. The most impressive of the many technologies that he favored was a laser scanner, which he claimed could improve the accuracy of grading and testing.

Professional Career

A decorated combat and special operations veteran, Fallin’s career took him around the globe. He served eight combat tours, including the Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan campaigns, and he earned numerous awards for his service.

A professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Fallin focuses on neuropsychiatric disorders, autism and developing applications and methods for genetic and epigenetic epidemiology, integrating genomics with epidemiology to study health and disease in populations.

She also serves as the Sylvia and Harold Halpert Professor and Chair of the Department of Mental Health at the Bloomberg School.

Several university officials and trustees spoke at the event, including Stewart, who thanked Fallin for his 12-year friendship and thanked the city of Montevallo and Shelby County for their initial support in helping UM obtain the building. Nix, who chairs the board’s naming committee, called it one of the most exciting moments of his professional career.

Achievements and Honors

In a career spanning 28 years, john fallin was honored with a variety of awards. He is a five-time Grammy winner and has been nominated for 34 of them, earning the title of “Grammy Legend” in 2000.

He received a Tony award for his work in the musical Aida alongside Tim Rice and he was honored with the Screen Actors Guild’s most coveted award, the “Oscar,” for best original song.

He was a UM history professor for 28 years, and he has been an advocate for civil rights throughout his life. He is a proud member of the University’s Distinguished Alumni Association, and has been a part of the Montevallo community for over 50 years. He was honored at a recent ceremony with the naming of the university’s newest building, the Dr. Wilson Fallin Hall, and his name will be on the marquee at the spring 2022 commencement.

John Fallin’s personal life is filled with music, travel, and the desire to have a family. He said he wants to have children when he’s completely ready for the responsibility.

He also reveals that he’s been a single parent before and is looking forward to starting a family again when it’s right for him.

As for his military career, he enlisted in 1861 with the 23rd Virginia infantry and served one year before being discharged. He served in a number of battles including Gettysburg, Bealton, Wilderness and Payne’s Farm.
