john ferrillo is an American oboist who has been with the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 2001. He has also performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Metropolitan Opera.

Born in Bedford, Massachusetts, he studied at the Juilliard School and Curtis Institute of Music. He has performed and taught at the Marlboro, Craftsbury, Monadnock, Waterloo, and Aspen music festivals.

Early Life and Education

Growing up in Bedford, Massachusetts, Ferrillo found his passion for music at a young age. His love for music was stoked by a number of teachers in the town’s public schools, including Gwen Powell and William Toland, both of whom were instrumental in introducing Ferrillo to flute playing and a thriving choral program.

He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute, where he studied with John de Lancie and received his diploma and Artist’s Certificate. He also participated in the Marlboro, Craftsbury, and Monadnock festivals and has taught at the Aspen and Waterloo summer music festivals. He currently serves on the faculties of the New England Conservatory and Boston University. His recordings include Mozart’s Quartet in F for oboe and strings, K.370; William Bolcom’s Serenata Notturna for oboe and strings, and Dutilleux’s Les Citations for oboe, harpsichord, double bass and percussion.
