Early Life and Education

John humenik, who died in January of this year, was born on August 15, 1957 and attended Northampton High School. He received a degree in engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park. His professional career took him from a stint in the Navy to a tenure as vice president of public affairs at the United States Postal Service. He was also named an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The most interesting aspect of his career was his association with a government program that helped foster technology transfer between academia and industry, which resulted in more than 500 patents awarded to Massachusetts firms. The MIT program was later cited by the National Science Foundation as one of the best in the world, and he was the first recipient of a patent for his contributions.
