The Life of John Lean

In John’s Gospel Jesus reveals God’s glory and provokes faith. He does this by performing “signs” or miracles.

These “signs” are a key part of what makes the gospel unique from the other three. They show that Jesus is God’s Son and reveal his true humanity. They also point to his teachings and demonstrate that he came from the Father to bring eternal life.

Early Life and Education

When he was a child John had little patience with schooling. He did not excel in any subject, but his father encouraged him to study hard.

When John was fourteen he went to a boarding school in Braintree led by Joseph Marsh where he learned to read, write and learn the Bible. He also had lessons in math and arithmetic.

In 1751 John was admitted to Harvard College as an undergraduate. He was a year older than the average student at that time.

Upon graduation John began his career as a teacher at the Central School of Worcester in order to earn money for law school. He taught at the school for a year and then moved in with James Putnam to study law under him.

Professional Career

John’s career as an architect, planner and educator has taken him around the world. He has been involved in the planning of major projects throughout Ottawa, including many that transformed the city into a more sustainable place.

He has also traveled extensively to countries in the developing world and Arctic Canada. His experience has taught him that rigid planning policies can be detrimental to communities.

For this reason, John believes in offering structure that maximizes creativity instead of constricting it. He focuses on giving his developers control over their work environment so they can personalize it.

Achievements and Honors

One of the most influential British filmmakers of his generation, Lean is often referred to as “the master of epic filmmaking” and was named a National Film Institute fellow. His most memorable film, The Bridge on the River Kwai, won seven Academy Awards and was named to the Library of Congress National Film Registry.

In addition to his directing creds, Lean was an ace in the hole as a cinematographer and editor. His oeuvre included such acclaimed works as Hobson’s Choice, Oliver Twist and A Passage to India. He also directed several notable television programs. He is credited with the most inventive editing of all time. He has been a mentor to many aspiring film directors, including Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. His contributions have influenced the craft of filmmaking for generations to come.

Personal Life

Despite the fame and success that he received from his work, Lean was a recluse who rarely left the house. He was a former film editor who worked with Noel Coward on four collaborations and he directed eleven actors in Oscar-nominated performances, including Celia Johnson, Alec Guinness, Peter O’Toole and Trevor Howard.

Lean was known for his ruthless directing style. He eschewed traditional British farce and instead embraced an international perspective on his films. He made Lawrence of Arabia in 1962.
