Early Life and Education

Mingo was educated despite being enslaved, and eventually achieved freedom by helping purchase land for others.

Years ago, he joined His Mission Organization and helped lead a coalition of people in advocating for criminal justice reform. Since his release from prison, he has led marches and rallies across the city in protest of police violence.

He has been an active presence at Black Lives Matter Plaza, organizing candlelight vigils for children who have passed away in D.C. and raising money to construct a basketball court for the community. Furthermore, he works to assist homeless individuals within D.C. This past summer he led a 100-mile walk from D.C. to Philadelphia in memory of Makiyah Wilson – a young girl fatally shot by police in 2018 – as part of his ongoing activism on gun violence issues within DC.

Professional Career

John Mingo was the first African-American place-kicker in professional football and also served as a halfback and punt returner for the Denver Broncos during the 1960s, making him an influential figure on several fronts.

That versatility may have been the difference in his career. He was a member of the original Broncos in 1960 and led the league in scoring with 123 points.

After his playing days were over, he began working as a drug-abuse counselor in Denver. He specialized in intervention work and was active within the Broncos alumni association.

Even after his success, he still doubted he’d ever be recognized by his beloved team. After an extended and difficult recovery process, he was finally recognized as one of NFL’s 50 Greatest Players in 2010.

Jonathan Mingo is a SUNY Regents Academic Honor Roll student with a 3.98 GPA who was named to the Chancellor’s and Athletic Director’s Honor Rolls in spring 2020. Additionally, he was selected for the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll and Fall Academic Honor Roll as well.

John is an outstanding athlete, leader and academic. In addition to his studies, he participates in community service projects and is part of the National Student-Athlete Council. With plans to attend medical school to become a pediatric cardiologist in 2021, John is currently working as a high school basketball coach while simultaneously taking care of himself academically. John takes great pride in his accomplishments and will continue doing good deeds for others!

Personal Life

John Mingo and his wife Arlene have two children: Jonathan, an accomplished American football player; and Daphne, who works at a community college.

The couple resides in Westchester County, New York and they enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors.

He is also an outspoken criminal justice reform advocate. After George Floyd’s murder, he joined a coalition that advocated for change and has become an outspoken spokesperson on the topic.

Mingo’s family legend tells of Thomas Woodbury, his enslaver, promising him freedom if the tides recede enough for him to walk out to what is known as “Becky’s Hedge” or “Aunt Becky’s Ledge.” Various versions of this tale conclude with drowning for Mingo; others claim he was freed.
