As a member of the Trisomy 21 Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Sara and her brother have been a part of a team of doctors that has helped them navigate their medical challenges.
They have had many surgeries, Emergency Department visits, therapy sessions and specialist appointments. They’re like family here at CHOP.
Early Life and Education
Sara was born in New Gloucester, Maine. She attended teacher’s college in Worcester, Massachusetts and then moved to New York City to become certified in chemistry and physics. She taught calisthenics (gym) and art lessons in her spare time, and also nursed wounded Civil War soldiers.
She and her husband donated works of art to several museums, including the High Museum of Art, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (Ridgefield, Connecticut) and the Tate Americas Foundation. They also served on the board of directors at Emory University’s Michael C. Carlos Museum, where they donated works of art and funded bus transportation for Title 1 students in the Emory area.
Sara was an author, lecturer and teacher. She was an advocate of the concept of a “lifelong education,” which included not only formal education but also learning from life experiences. She authored or co-authored more than 60 books and has been published in a variety of publications.
