John Sawin was raised in Hesston, Kansas. After earning both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree, he joined Eastern Mennonite University as an instructor of U.S. history and politics.
He holds a doctorate in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and has served as co-director of EMU’s Honors program and president of its Faculty Senate.

His career has taken him to Pebble Beach in California, where he oversees the finances, tournaments and guest experiences at an entity which has hosted 14 national championships. One of his responsibilities includes co-chairing next year’s U.S. Amateur which takes place June 13-16 at Pebble Beach.
