John Tomaszewski is a world class golfer. He is a multiple-time winner of the PGA Tour Championship and has been awarded with numerous other honors as well. His achievements, career, and personal life are the subject of this article.

Tomaszewski has been recognized as a leading expert on democracy and civil society. He has participated in numerous election observation missions in Africa and has testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa. Currently, he leads IRI’s programming in Burundi and Kenya. Previously, he served as Resident Program Director for East Africa.

He was a former board member of the RVC Housing Authority and was involved in the Centennial Committee for the RVC. For nearly 50 years, he and his wife, Joan, lived in Rockville Centre, N.Y. They are both active members of St. Agnes Cathedral Parish in Rockville Centre.

In addition to his role as IRI’s Regional Director for Africa, Tomaszewski also provided overall strategic guidance for the organization’s governance programs. This included leading programming in Kenya, Burundi and the African region at large. His other responsibilities included supporting the generation of democratic institutions on the African continent.

Since 2007, Tomaszewski has been working as a Visiting Scholar at the Center for African Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been a regular visitor to Africa and has conducted numerous research studies. Some of his research has focused on civil society development, youth inclusion, and civic education. He has also worked on Somalia and Somaliland.
