John Vaccarino was the president of the University of Guelph from 2009-2016 and focused on cultivating community partnerships and connecting with local residents. Additionally, he helped the university launch the Arrell Food Institute and renewed their 10-year partnership with Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Susan Frasson, president of Wood Development Group in Guelph and a major donor to the University, praised Vaccarino as an “unfailingly enthusiastic” leader who strived to help the University reach its “Improve Life” motto and strengthen ties with local businesses and residents.

On July 9, he passed away at 83 years old, leaving behind his wife Mary E. Vaccarino; son Joseph Vaccarino of Catonsville; daughters Patricia Vaccarino Fuller of Sykesville and Barbara Vaccarino Ziegler of Prince Frederick; brother Mark Vaccarino of Ellicott City; sister Philippa Owen of Agawam, Mass; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
