Early Life and Education

Early life experiences are key drivers of future success for children. A supportive environment, access to quality care services and healthy relationships all foster positive results in children’s development.

Lucas wasn’t perfect when it came to pitching, but his control was nearly flawless: in his career, he only ever threw seven wild pitches. Additionally, his curveball, change of pace pitch and loose forkball made him difficult for opponents to hit.

Lucas earned three World Series rings during his career: for the New York Giants (1923-24), Boston Braves (1924-25) and Cincinnati Reds (1926-33) as both starting pitcher and pinch hitter, winning 16 games while maintaining a.333 batting average with 114 pinch hits as an on-base pinch hitter. Lucas passed away at age 84 in Nashville Tennessee where his burial place is Spring Hill Cemetery.

Professional Career

Lucas was an efficient two-way player who could pitch or play second base. His arsenal included fastballs, changeups, cut fastballs and curveballs and was adept at getting on base at bat.

He made his major league debut with the Boston Braves in 1924 under Manager Dave Bancroft’s attempt to convert him into a second baseman; although he managed to field it well enough at second, his poor hitting forced his demotion to Seattle of the Pacific Coast League.

Lucas returned to major league baseball with the Cincinnati Reds in 1926 and quickly established himself as an integral member of their rotation. Over his career, he won 157 games against 135 losses with an ERA of 3.72 while throwing 204 complete games and 22 shutouts. Furthermore, he was an effective batter, posting an average of.281 and reaching 300 six times.

Achievement and Honors

Lucas has made her mark at WKU with her academic excellence as well. She earned placement on both the CUSA academic all-district team and all-conference academic squad, and participated in many community service projects including volunteering for Hope 4 Harlie and Friends of Jaclyn foundations.

She became the first Lady Topper ever to earn top-team All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-American teams, joining teammates Alyssa Cavanaugh and Rachel Anderson on these honors lists.

Locally, Lucas and Westfield junior Haleigh Dellow led their teams to Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 league and sectional titles this season as well as All-WNY small school first team selection. Lucas led from behind the plate by posting an impressive 0.66 ERA while holding opposing batters to an average batting score of just.122 average against him.

Personal Life

Rogers Hornsby was his favorite hitter while Babe Phelps proved most difficult. He attributes his success to hard work, determination and perseverance.

Rick Giolito no longer watches his son’s games live on television because the risk of witnessing another bad outing has become too great to bear.
