Milton Thomas Passes Away at the Age of 81

Milton Thomas, an active violinist on the Southern California music scene for several decades, passed away June 16 after having been hospitalized since May.

Thomas was raised in an environment that encouraged his independence, yet always made sure his family’s needs were taken care of. Thomas never stopped working hard to provide for their wellbeing.

Early Life and Education

Milton Thomas was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family, watching their grandchildren play sports, participating in extracurricular activities like cribbage or gardening and rooting on Iowa Hawkeyes football team.

Milton’s father established himself in London as a scrivener, providing documents for legal transactions and drawing Milton’s interest for bibliography and history to life.

He became inspired by Galileo’s work, leading him to leave the Church of England as an ordained minister and embrace liberty of conscience and the primacy of Scripture over authority when it came to matters of religion. Additionally, he advocated religious tolerance toward non-Christians. Probably best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost.

Professional Career

Thomas attended College of the Holy Cross as an English major, earning outstanding grades with honors. He found his time there one of the happiest periods of his life and gave credit to its white nuns, who demanded excellence from their students and respected their dignity during class field trips around Savannah.

Thomas was inspired to enter law school by the promise of becoming a civil rights attorney, working at an Atlanta firm after being denied employment due to racial prejudice at other firms. Instead, he became a teacher and published numerous articles and books. Thomas fathered two sons before passing away peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital surrounded by family and friends.

Achievement and Honors

Milton Thomas was an outstanding individual who will long be remembered fondly by family and friends as someone with unquestionable integrity who tirelessly worked to better lives of others. Milton will always be remembered fondly as being loving, kindhearted, and warmhearted by them all.

Not content to focus solely on his academic pursuits, he also created many plates for different publications such as John Boydell’s Bible and George Kearsley’s edition of Shakespeare. Furthermore, he engraved an Aquatint series entitled Views in Egypt.

In his later years, Thomas founded several businesses and was an active member of Calvary Assembly of God in Centralia. He is survived by his two sons Marcella Izabella Thomas and Jesse Thomas as well as mother Henrietta Thomas; sisters Linda Oliver and Dialo Thomas as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas was an amazing father who deeply cared for his family and many close friends. He leaves two sons behind; Jesse and Josse; sister Maureen; brother-in-law Darren; one niece and one nephew as well as mother-in-law Mary as his legacy.

Christ’s College in Cambridge admitted Milton as a student in 1625 with the intent to become a minister; he was dismissed several years later due to reasons that are still unclear; perhaps his imagination found studying Scholasticism uninspiring or perhaps his Puritan beliefs made him uneasy with its hierarchy and uniform worship services.

He promoted freedom of conscience, Scripture as the central authority in matters of faith, religious toleration for dissidents and political philosophy against tyranny and state-sanctioned religion through both his poetic and prose works.
