Early Life and Education
Oliver Mitchell was born in Los Angeles, California. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School before going on to graduate from Whittier College. On 5 June 1941 he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve as an aviation cadet but was quickly promoted into second lieutenancy three months later on 14 March 1942.
Mitchell was an outstanding pianist and singer who regularly performed concerts. Additionally, he recorded two albums for Koch International with the Cleveland Chorale featuring works by Martin Amlin, Elliott Carter and William Thomas McKinley.
