He intends to focus on fundraising and advocating for necessary capital improvements. In an interview with Miami Today staff writer Yudislaidy Fernandez, he shared his priorities and provided an inside look into his life.

Early Life and Education

Phil George, former Angelo State University men’s basketball coach and athletic director, had an illustrious career in San Angelo. He served the Rams for 36 years as their coach and AD, beginning with his first year at San Angelo College until 1968 when they joined the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II competition for the first time.

His coaching career saw the Rams to a National Junior College Athletic Association title in 1957 and eight Pioneer Conference titles. Furthermore, he served as the school’s first full-time men’s athletic director from 1978 until 1986.

He is a member of the International Reporters for Excellence and has earned several IRE Awards. Additionally, he was recognized with the Municipal Leader Award from the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions for his efforts to improve environmental conditions in Highland Park.

Personal Life

Phil was a Yale graduate and had previously been an accomplished classical scholar. However, he chose to forsake academia in order to pursue farming full time.

Thus, his physical appearance has transformed from that of an intellectual to that of a rugged cowboy. He lives, walks, and speaks like one of the ranchers he used to know under Bronco Henry.

Phil finds a way to express himself through Peter, even though his sexuality has been suppressed. He hopes that by building upon Peter’s toughness, he can build the same armor Bronco Henry gave him for survival in life that helped him survive.
