Steven Mellody, 59, Acquitted of 59 Sexual Offences Including Four Counts of Rape

Steven Mellody, a former PE teacher and Salvation Army youth pastor from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs was charged with 59 sexual offenses including four counts of rape against two students at an ultra-strict Christian college. On Friday via videolink he appeared before Melbourne magistrate Luisa Bazzani’s court for trial.

Even against objections from one alleged victim’s family, she granted bail for him. He must live with both parents and cannot be alone with a child.

Steven Melody was born in Farmington, Missouri on September 24, 2019 and passed away April 9th 2023 at Georgian Gardens Center. He leaves behind his siblings as well as numerous aunts and uncles.

Emails sent from St Andrews Christian College in Wantirna South revealed how colleagues complained to Yvonne Hughes, head of junior school, that Mellody had allowed students to become “involved” with him and that this behavior must stop, otherwise she warned that Mellody would need to be reported to police; eventually Mellody was fired by St Andrews Christian College shortly thereafter.

Mellody, 37, was charged with multiple sexual offenses against two female students at his former high school. On October 22, at Melbourne Magistrates Court he pled guilty to more than 50 offences including sexual penetration with minors and grooming; eleven charges (four for rape) were dismissed as well.

Family of one of the alleged victims strongly opposed his bail application and told police she had been coerced into withdrawing or revoking her statement against him in court proceedings against him. However, Judge Bazzani decided to grant bail on grounds he had no previous convictions and his parents promised their support and supervision of him during this case.

Documents indicate that school officials had issued multiple warnings to this teacher; however, when police raided his home in October 2018 for an investigation of sexual abuse of minors – specifically allegations including rape and grooming. He was then arrested on 59 separate counts including rape and grooming.

St Andrews Christian College issued a letter on November 6 to parents detailing its shock at these allegations and confirmed it had fired Mellody, as well as conducting its own investigation into them.
