Thomas Oliva, a Latino Lawmaker from Queens, is a Partner at Wingate, Russotti, Shapiro & Halperin, LLP

Oliva earned his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law. He serves on the board of Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County and lectures about personal injury law. Furthermore, he is partner at Wingate Russotti Shapiro & Halperin LLP.

Ollie was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania to an extremely impoverished family and married at 16 years old.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Oliva was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania in 1894. Growing up as an impoverished working-class resident surrounded by factories was no easy feat; her childhood was fraught with hardships such as poor air quality.

In 1914 she answered a newspaper advertisement for “The Most Beautiful Girl in New York”, winning and propelling her career forward.

She then signed with Myron Selznick’s Selznick Pictures, where her first film for them, Upstairs and Down, established an image as “baby vamp”, something which she capitalized upon with 1920’s The Flapper.

He graduated from Hofstra Law School and currently sits on the board of Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County. Additionally, he served as Assistant District Attorney and Special Victims Bureau Assistant Attorney before moving onto other roles.

Professional Career

Thomas Oliva is an attorney specializing in Personal Injury – Medical Malpractice: Plaintiff matters and an active member of the State Bar of Texas. Additionally, she enjoys live theater productions, sporting events, and world travel with her family.

The Minnesota Twins website lists Oliva as having signed with them on March 19, 1961, but Cambria actually signed him in February of that year due to a tight signing timeframe which made obtaining his true birth certificate and passport impossible. According to Oliva himself, when coming over he used his brother’s papers for immigration purposes while also not using his real name or age upon arriving. All these factors contribute to Oliva’s legacy alongside his incredible hitting prowess.

Achievement and Honors

Oliva achieved great success during his eight seasons as a major leaguer, winning three American League batting titles and earning himself the Gold Glove Award for right field. With quick wrists and powerful yet unbridled power at his fingertips, he became one of baseball’s premier hitters.

In 1965, he became the first player ever to win back-to-back AL batting crowns with an average of.321 while also finishing second in MVP voting that year with 16 homers and 98 RBI.

Oliva’s decades-long career has strengthened the roots of communities where he grew up while creating pathways towards opportunity and inclusion. He currently serves as President of the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County as well as serving as partner at Pena & Kahn and Assistant District Attorney with Special Victims Bureau.

Personal Life

Tom Oliva is involved with several community organizations. He serves on the board of Queens County Latino Lawyers Association and Hofstra University School of Law Latino Law Students Association; has opened two restaurants; and continues his activism and legal work in Queens and Bronx communities.

Oliva had an outstanding 1993 season and was set to succeed Terry Pendleton at third base for Atlanta when he dove for a fly ball on wet grass and suffered severe knee damage while dodging it.

Pryor spent his final years of baseball playing primarily as a pinch-hitter and designated hitter before being honored with induction into the Hall of Fame in 1991. Unfortunately, at age 46 he suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away.
