George Washington Carver was an inspiring African-American who overcame numerous obstacles to pursue his educational dreams. Born into slavery and raised on Moses Carver’s farm, he achieved great success despite these setbacks.

He served as a science advisor to many organizations, such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and St Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Additionally, he coedited several journals and was part of numerous scientific advisory boards. For his outstanding contributions, he was recognized with multiple awards such as the National Medal of Science and American Society for Cancer Research’s highest award.

George Van Eps was born into a musical family; his father Fred served as banjo master and sound engineer, while his mother played piano. George van Eps went on to become an accomplished professional musician, performing with Freddy Martin and Benny Goodman before moving to Hollywood in 1934.

He established himself as an esteemed soloist and studio musician, working with many of jazz’s premier stars. Additionally, he authored a how-to guitar book and designed instruments.
